Marc Taylor – PHP?

PHP has grown since its creation in 1995 to one of the largest and most prominent coding languages powering the World Wide Web. The creator Rasmus Lerdorf created the language as a way to organise his online resume. It was named ‘Personal Home Page Tools’ (PHP). Later he updated the coding to communicate with databases as well as giving users the ability to develop simple dynamic Web applications.

In order to help in the development of the coding (to help fix bugs and to improve the coding,) he released PHP for users to interact and manipulate. Since its release to the internet in 1995 two more web developers, Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski (working with Rasmus Lerdorf), helped in the development of the PHP, after their interest in PHP’s database coding abilities. It has since spawned 5 versions; PHP2.0 – 1997, PHP3.0 – 1998, PHP4 – 1999, PHP5; 2004.

 Advantages of using PHP?

Compared to other scripting languages, PHP’s has many advantages; its release to the internet in 1995 (to help in the development of the coding) has spawned a huge amount of PHP developers, which makes it very stable against bugs and errors. PHP also provides many levels of security against web users and hackers. Its main advantages for developers are that it is very quick to use, as well as being simple to learn, it works on almost any platform, as well as working alongside other codes (e.g Javascript) and being open sourced.

 Disadvantages?

The only disadvantage I found was that Error handling is not as sophisticated as Cold Fusion or ASP.

PHP is considered as one of the most important coding languages on the internet world, and due to this, I feel it is required to learn. The ability to create CMS’s for clients to update their websites seem to be a godsend, as from experience clients always want everything and quickly (so the ability for them to update the sites personally will save a lot of time and hassle for them and myself). Also I plan to use the coding on my production project this year, in order to create an online community. After researching into coding’s I felt that PHP was the better option as competing websites such as http://www.myspace.com and http://www.facebook.com both use the coding. Its optimisation options compared to that of ASP which can be seen in http://www.bebo.com is a lot more advanced
