Testing Plan

When I have created my beta I will need to follow a testing plan to ensure that it created a strong flash portfolio for my client. I will need to test that it works correctly and that it satisfies the needs of the end user and my client. I will also be using Jacob Nielsen’s ‘6 quality components’ as an aid to helping me with my testing.

These 6 quality components are:

Learnability
Efficiency
Memorability
Errors
Satisfaction
Utility

I have created a 3 step process to follow to prepare me for my testing after the beta has been created. These steps are:

Step 1: Test the CD-ROM myself

I will be checking the CD-ROM to make sure each page; button and other functions work as they should. This will avoid these errors appearing when the sample tests the CD-ROM.

Step 2: Instructions & Questionnaire

The next step will be to create a set of instructions for the testing sample to follow when testing the CD-ROM. Then when the user has finished testing the CD-ROM they will need to fill out a questionnaire that I will create in as part of this second step. When creating the questionnaire I need to take into account that I am not there to observe, therefore I will need to have open-ended as well as closed questions. This will help me to see if a few people in the sample found areas harder then other as they have the room to state this in the questionnaire.

Step 3: Sample Testing (Target Audience)

Find a group of 10 people to test the CD-ROM portfolio. These will need to be a representative sample of my target audience. However, it will be hard to get hold of 10 media professionals to look at the CD-ROM so I will be showing my work to people of a similar age and location.

There are some contacts that I have made that fit into this target audience. I will be giving them the CD-ROM to look at and a questionnaire to fill in once completed. If I am unable to provide them will the CD-ROM, I will send them the finished Flash file via e-mail along with instructions and the questionnaire.

Analysis and Objectives!

Smart Objectives

Specific

  • The CD-ROM portfolio is targeted at a specific group of people (potential employers) and will display the work of one person to reach out to the potential employers.

Measurable

  • The CD-ROM will be shown to media professionals in the area of my clients work to see if it meets the objectives.

Attainable

  • I am capable of creating a CD-ROM and using Flash as I have done it before. My challenge will be to increase upon the knowledge that I already have in this area to create a better project.

Realistic

  • I have access to Flash at university and help is always available if I need it. I will be able to create my CD-ROM as I have access to these things. There are many tutorials online that I can learn from and gain new skills to help me create my project.

Time

  • I will need to finish the project before week 13 in January when the project will be handed in. However, it should be completed before this as I will need time for testing.

Swot Analysis

Strengths

  • Having the portfolio on a CD-ROM will allow the user to access my work with the internet and it can be transportable.
  • As the portfolio is not on the internet the user will not be distracted by other websites or portfolios when viewing the CD-ROM.
  • When creating the CD-ROM I can develop upon the Flash and ActionScript skills that I already have.
  • I could use the Flash portfolio as a Flash website. It could be transferred and used for the web in the future if needed.

Weaknesses

  • As the portfolio is on CD-ROM the user may forget about it or even lose it. I will create an eye-catching design for the cover of the CD-ROM so it stays in the users mind.
  • If more work needs to be added to the CD-ROM, new copies will need to be made and the old ones will be wasted.

Opportunities

  • The CD-ROM will help me to gain a job/career.
  • It will show the users not just my work that will be displayed on the CD-ROM but also my Flash skills.

Threats

  • The work that is displayed on the CD-ROM could be copied. I will need to insure that it is copyrighted. To help avoid this situation I could watermark my work. However, this may not be very appealing to potential employers.

Pest Analysis

Political

  • N/A

Economical

  • A job/career could be gained from the CD-ROM portfolio.

Social

  • Logo or work shown on CD-ROM could be offensive to others.
  • Contacts could be made from the distribution of the CD-ROM.

Technological

  • The target audience for my CD-ROM should have access to a computer to view the CD-ROM.
  • The CD is an older form of disk that stores digital data; therefore a CD drive is standard on most computers.

Last but not least!

I have finally finished all my post and proposal for the first assignment. It feels good to have it all done and I am excited for the next stage of the project (production). I hope to create a successful CD-ROM portfolio and use the new skills I have gained to the best of my ability.

Thanks for reading!

Final Project Proposal

The Challenge

The aim is to create a new media product using trends within the industry.

My Chosen Subject Area

Flash is an area that I am interested in. With the takeover of Adobe, Flash is advancing and becoming more commonly used. I have gained basic Flash skills in prerequisite modules and hope to expand on my Flash skills. It is a goal of mine to learn more about the scripting language for Flash, by learning ActionScript I can take the Flash skills that I already have and develop them for further use.

My Project

I have chosen to create an interactive CD-ROM using Flash. I will be creating a Portfolio for a third year web and new media student. The CD-ROM portfolio will display the work that they have done, CV and contact information.

Objectives

Technical

To meet my technical objectives to develop my Flash skills I have to find out more about Flash intermediate and advance skills and learn the scripting language ActionScript. I have began to try and meet my objectives by reading about ActionScript and build upon the ground work that I already have by completing online tutorials and understanding the technical process of creating a project using Flash.

I will aim to gain skills in these areas of Flash and ActionScript:

Loops

If statements

Scrolling

Mouse controls and events

Assigning attributes

With the skills that I will gain I will be creating a platform to showcase my clients work to potential employers on an interactive CD-ROM. I hope for the CD-ROM to not just show my clients work but also show those who view it my clients potential and the skills that she has.

Professional

The professional objectives that I aim to gain tie in with my technical objectives. I aim to gain Flash and ActionScript Technical skills to make me a more desirable candidate for employment. I feel Flash is a key skill to have and by gaining these advance skills I feel that I will be more prepare for the professional new media industry. Being a young professional within the industry can be very competitive, this is my reasoning for creating a CD-ROM portfolio, as many people have online portfolios, I feel that if a potential employer had one in the physical form it could grab their attention. The CD-ROM is also a piece of work to show to a potential employee in itself. It’s not just the content but the platform that I use that can impress and show my clients work at a professional standard.

Market Research

It is difficult to find statistics in this area of research. This is due to there being no market for portfolios. They are individual portfolios that are given to employers for them to judge the desirability of a prospective employee; hence a market for CD-ROM portfolios does not exist.

Competitors & Users

The competitors will be other prospective employees. I have found that there are many ways in which people display their portfolio from paper to websites. However most of these are not something that is given to employers (the users) in the physical form. A CD-ROM can be handed over to a potential employer to keep hold of and view in their leisure; this is advantage to using a CD-ROM for a portfolio.

When talking to the design company Ideas Room, they thought that CD-ROM’s are a great way to gain clients. They would use them in press packs and send them to potential and current clients through the post with letters. A CD-ROM portfolio is a way in which to impress potential employers before the interview stage.

Mock-ups

I have created a mock-up of the menu page for the CD-ROM. The Design concept was to show the clients personality and creativity. Using a contrast of bright and dark colours leads the users to the main content of the page. My client likes the use of bright colours this is the reason for creating a colourful logo to represent my client.  The cards in the centre will be followed through in the rest of the CD-ROM as navigation.

Conclusion

The next stage of the project will be production. I will be continuing my designs and development of ActionScript to help me create the CD-ROM portfolio. Developing my skills will aid me in my production and I will have a greater chance of success.

CD-ROM Portfolio Pitch

Pitch

I will be creating a CD-ROM portfolio for a Web and New media student. The CD-ROM will showcase their work and will be given to media professionals.

Flash/ActionScript

I will be using a combination of Flash animation and ActionScript to create a platform to show my clients work. The use of Flash and ActionScript will help me to create a professional look as well as making the experience of viewing the CD-ROM more appealing to the eye. By using ActionScript I will be able to do more with my clients work and get the user involved with the CD-ROM. The interactivity on the CD-ROM will be subtle, as I don’t want the users attention to be taken away from my clients work.

Target Audience

My clients’ potential employers will see the CD-ROM portfolio. These creative professionals will be the target audience of the CD-ROM. As these professionals will be working in the creative industry the CD-ROM will need to draw the users attention to my clients work as they may already see many portfolios. This is a reason for using a CD-ROM to showcase my clients work as it is a different platform used in comparison to others. A CD-ROM is an object that can be given to potential employers to show who my client is and show my clients potential to be a working professional.

Design

The design of the CD-ROM will need to show who my client is; it will display my clients personality and work ethic. The designs need to send a message to potential employers of what my client is like. The designs will incorporate a professional and clean look showing the users that my client is focused and ready to work within the creative industry.

Mockup

The concept behind the design was to show my clients personality yet still keeping a professional look. This mock-up has two areas that express these sides to my client. The foreground represents my clients personality and the background represents her professional/ work ethic.

Colour

My client likes bright and bold colours, so I incorporated this into the design of the foreground and the logo design. I didn’t want to use too many colours as it would be too overpowering so I decided to use the background as a contrast with the use of the two tones of grey.

Logo

I have also created a logo for my client, the logo is simple design yet effective as it represents my client. I decided to use three colours to show the vibrant side to my client. The use of the brush strokes is a representation of my clients creativity and artistic flare.

Layout

My client wanted a consistent and simple layout; this is the reasoning for the card shaped design idea. I will be using the card shape for the navigation throughout the CD-ROM to help keep the designs consistent. The use of consistency with the design will allow the users to access any information the y need with ease and speed.

Types of CD’s

There are three types of CD that I could use to hold my clients portfolio. I need the CD-ROM to stand out from others that are sent out to potential employers by my client. I will be hoping to use a mini CD or a business card shaped CD as the novelty of a smaller CD can give my client that edge over other applicants. I will need to take into account the capacity of each type of CD as they differ from disk to disk. I will also have to take into account that the smaller novelty CD’s will not work in a slot CD drive, this limits the target audience for my client to employers with computers that have a CD tray.

Next Step…

I have basic Flash skills and have created a CD-ROM in the past, so now I need to develop those skills that I have. To create a portfolio CD-ROM I need to look into ActionScript to learn how to create an interactive gallery for my CD-ROM.

My first step is to develop understanding of Flash/ActionScript. I have been looking at tutorials on the internet to help me gain the skills I require. Here are some websites I have found that will aid me in this process:

Flash

What is Flash?

Flash is vector animation software that was first made to create animations for web pages. Flash is most commonly used to create animations, advertisements, web components and is also used in the development of RIA’s (Rich Internet Applications).

How has Flash developed?

Flash has changed a lot over the years. Its creators Jonathan Gay, Michelle Welsh and Charlie Jackson created the first version of Flash called FutureSplash Animator. In 1991 Macromedia re-branded FurureSplash animator and released the first version of Macromedia Flash. There were 9 versions of Macromedia Flash in total. Macromedia took the original version and have improved upon it each time to allow the many features it has today including:

Object library

JavaScript plug-in

ActionScript

Internal variables

MP3 streaming

HTML text formatting …..and many more.

In 2007 Flash was released under the adobe name. Adobe enabled Flash to have better integration with the existing adobe programmes. Adbobe has also given Flash better vector drawing capabilities.

ActionScript

ActionScript is the scripting language used to develop websites and software using Flash. Flash originally had little interactivity features. ActionScript allowed users to add actions to object, buttons and frames. ActionScript language has also developed through each version of Flash adding new capabilities including variables, expressions, operators, if statements, and loops.

When to use Flash?

According to Stefan Mischook (http://www.killersites.com/articles/articles_FlashUse.htm), Flash should be used as a presentation. The user should be able to sit back and enjoy the Flash movie. I disagree with him, Flash is great at enabling the user to interact with the content.

Using Flash to create CD-ROM’s

CD-ROMs are a great promotional tool, and a way to distribute information, or a project that you would like to give clients. CD-ROM can contain information, video, animation, graphics, or any other information that can be stored electronically. Using Flash is a way in which we can make this information on the CD look presentable and add interactivity.

Flash has many features that allow you to combine text, graphics, video, audio and the internet which makes it ideal in creating a CD-ROM. As Flash is developing there are more areas in which we can explore and add to CD-ROM’s.

u       Advantages: No need for the internet and no bandwidth limitations.

Why have I chosen Flash?

Flash is ever changing and getting more popular with new features including 3D effects and dynamic sound it is being used everywhere. Flash is being used for web application, CD-ROM’s, animations, flash games, websites and much more. I have chosen to use Flash as it is an ever evolving platform for creativity. I feel that we have not yet seen the full potential of Flash used within the creative industry.

SCAMMPER

Last week we learnt how to apply SAMMPER to our projects to help us find new and different in which we can improve apon our existing ideas. Since our last lesson I have been thinking about what I wanted to create using Flash for my project. I have decided to create a CD-ROM portfolio.

Here is what ideas I have come up with using SCAMMPER:

  • Substitute – I am substituting a classic portfolio to a digital portfolio (from paper to CD).
  • Combine – I wil combine my CD-ROM with outer packaging that gives the user a taster of what the CD-ROM will be like.
  • Adapt – Online I have seen walk through galleries that use Flash. I wish to adapt this feature into my portfolio.
  • Magnify – I want my gallery to be the strongest part of the CD-ROM. I will be making sure that those who use my CD-ROM can easily navigate through the gallery.
  • Modify – I don’t want this to be like a standard CD-ROM that people get and ignore. To grab peoples attention I will try to midify the standard menu and create a more interactive one.
  • Put to other uses – Another use of the CD-ROM is to take parts of the CD-ROM to help create a website to go with it.
  • Eliminate or minify – I could use a mini CD for my CD-ROM however, they can only hold upto 210 MB of data. I will have to consider this in my production process.
  • Rearrange – I could change to order of the way in which a person views the CD-ROM. Instead of inserting the CD-ROM and coming to the menu first. The CD-ROM could auto load to the gallery and then come to the menu after.
